Types of Rubbish We Don’t Collect

Rubbish Please is happy to handle all your waste collection needs and lift the burden of this bothersome chore off your shoulders. However, there are some types of refuse even the well-trained and fully insured professional operatives we work with cannot handle. These are usually hazardous substances, medical waste, chemicals, poisons, or paint.

Hazardous substances

Toxic Materials SignТhose substances that pose a threat to the environment, human or animal health, are classified as hazardous. Because of this, hazardous waste is handled under special regulations, with huge fines and even potential jail-time awaiting those who improperly dispose of it.

Hazardous waste is usually produced by factories, power plants, refinement facilities, etc. However, it can also be produced at home as the leftovers of chemicals and compounds we use day-to-day. These may include antifreeze, oil, fuels, poison, pesticides, paint, herbicides, insecticides, some types of cleaning detergents, and more.

Asbestos

Toxic SignAsbestos is a mineral that has been widely used due to its resilience and insulation properties, before people realised the simple fact that it is highly toxic. There are six types of asbestos and all of them are highly carcinogenic. The main differences are in their chemical structure.

The most widely spread form of asbestos is chrysotile. It’s characterised by having longer fibers than other forms of asbestos. The fibers are also of the curly variety, making it quite distinct. Asbestos advocates (yes, there are those) claim it’s not as toxic as other forms, but studies show the same carcinogenic effects.

Glass wool

Caution SignGlass wool is another type of insulation that creates health issues. It is made with a textile material similar to wool and glass fibres bound to it (hence the name). Due to its structure, it irritates the skin, as well as the eyes and even the respiratory system. Though it’s not carcinogenic, it’s still a health concern.

Medical waste

Biological waste signMedical waste is pretty straightforward and shouldn’t require too much explanation - every type of refuse generated from medical facilities in the progress of diagnosing, treating, or immunising humans and animals is classified as medical waste. Byproducts of dental practice and testing fall within the same category.

Why We Don't Collect Hazardous Materials

Rubbish Please does not perform collection if the materials are hazardous. This means that we stay away from asbestos and glass wool, chemicals, paint, medical waste, insecticides, pesticides, etc. We have no problem with empty canisters as long as they’re properly cleaned from the substance that used to reside inside. However, we do not deal with full canisters.

Hazardous waste disposal requires special equipment. Some of the materials have to be transported and disposed of in a special manner. That’s why we can’t handle them. Asbestos, glass wool, toxic, medical, or hazardous waste will not be collected. For more information about what we do collect, please visit the other web pages of our website or call 020 3404 5556.

Rubbish Please is always happy to lend a helping hand in rubbish removal, as long as the refuse you want collected does not fall within one of the categories specified on this page.
